John K. asks:
How are people finding me on Twitter? I keep getting messages that people are following me, but I don’t know how they found me.
First of all, John, congratulations on your burgeoning Twitter network! The fact that people are finding you proves your account is doing what it’s supposed to do: connect you to more people.
There are a few ways people might be finding you on Twitter, including these common methods:
Someone looked for you on Twitter. If you click Find People in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen, you can use a variety of methods to find people you know. The first option is a search, where someone could have searched for your username, first or last name.

Someone uploaded their address book to their Twitter account, and you were in it. If you allow it, Twitter will fetch your address book from Gmail, Yahoo!, AOL, Hotmail or MSN and perform a quick match between the people in the that address book and the people who have Twitter accounts.

Someone they know is following you, or vice versa. You can see a list of followers on any profile page on Twitter. So if you’re following your local dog club’s Twitter account, anybody who looks at the list of followers on the dog club’s page can find you, and follow you, from there.

Someone saw a post you made. Any time you send a post to Twitter, it’s marked with @ and your username, such as @talance. So if I made a comment on my dog club’s Twitter page, anyone can click the @talance next to my comment and follow me that way.

I just began a twitter account and people cannot find me by name or user name when performing a search. If I want to send out a request to all of the school alumni and those interested in our school to follow our activities and news on twitter how do I do this?
Thanks

Hi, Mark.
First of all, what user name (they call this a “handle” on Twitter) and profile information did you put on Twitter? I’ll check to see if I can figure out why you’re not showing up in the search.
Secondly, I’d recommend a two-pronged approach for telling people to follow you. Start by sending a note to everyone on your mailing lists. Tell them you’re on Twitter, and make sure to tell them how they can find you (e.g., @stdavidschools). You have a website, so also post a note there. Have you thought of adding a Twitter feed to your site? That can help generate traffic.
Then find everyone you can on Twitter and start to follow them. Twitter lets you check your address book against all the registered e-mail addresses on the system to find any matches. You can automatically follow everyone who they’ve found. Many people follow anyone who follows them, especially if they already know you and have a relationship with them.
Let us know how it goes!

Thank you for your quick reply. The Handle is StDavidTigers. I set up a peronal account and somehow I forced it to follow StDavidTigers by inputting my e-mail. Problem is I cannot replicate how I did it.
I would love to place a twitter feed on our school’s Website. Will this allow individuals to simply use it as a link to our twitter site?

Twitter’s search isn’t great. That’s important to keep in mind. But if you start tweeting more, there will be more for the search tool to snag. If you can tweet 1-3 times a day, that’s a pretty manageable regimen.
And yes, a Twitter feed on your website would allow people to both go to your Twitter site and also see your most recent updates. If you use your Twitter account like a news feed, it can be a really useful resource for your audience members.
