Today’s Gadget – CherryPal PC
Anyone who has tried to go for a walk with a portable CD player knows how nice MP3 players are. No jumping, no expensive batteries, nothing to break because there are no moving parts.
You’ll love the CherryPal cloud computer for all the same reasons. It’s a great little energy-efficient machine that’s super simple for the technically intimidated, only costs $249 and uses just two watts of power (most computers use 65 watts).
From the press release:
The CherryPal desktop is dead simple to set up and boots in 20 seconds. Users simply enter a username and password to access the CherryPalCloud, which offers an incredibly simple, intuitive interface. CherryPal has no exposed operating system, so all application and functions are managed solely by a Firefox-based browser. CherryPal does all operation system and application upgrading and installation, meaning there is no maintenance required. Because there are no moving parts, there is little possibility of hardware failure. CherryPal also offers a free 24/7 helpline.
Perfect portable solution if your organization is strapped for cash but you need something secure and portable to move around the office.

It’s like a CPU, and you attach a monitor and keyboard and mouse to it?
Thanks, Monique.

Yes, exactly. It’s a little thing about the size of a paperback, and it’s perfect for anybody who wants to just check e-mail, browse the web, do word processing and spreadsheets – what about 99 percent of the people I know do.
It’s called a “cloud computer,” meaning that many of the sophisticated programs run on the Internet, like how you use web-based e-mail or how many people use Picnic to edit their images. You’ll hear a lot about cloud computing in the future – I’ll make sure to keep covering it here.

Thank you for talking about the CherryPal C100. I am linking to this page from my blog, CherryPal for Everyone, at cherrypal dot blogspot dot com. I am excited about how the CherryPal can bridge barriers to people who have not had access to computers or the internet because of money, fear, education or other challenges. I will be commenting on my experience
of using it on my blog as soon as I get my own CherryPal C100! You can use CODE CPP206 to get your own CherryPal for $10 less than purchase price at Paypal when they are shipping (soon!) The best update I’ve gotten on availability is that the delay is due to a last minute decision to upgrade the solid state storage to a faster, higher quality version than
planned. The hardware is working perfectly but the software requires some tweaks to fully optimize the OS to the new hardware. I think its worth the wait as there is nothing else available at the price point of $239 (using code CPP206). Come visit http://cherrypal.blogspot.com for updates. I am an anticipated fan with interests in cloud computing, green washing, sustainability and cheap, reliable connectivity.

So sad! I just read on Penguinppc about the rumor they’re closed. Maybe they’re open under another name? Here’s what they say:
Genesi has posted an update and a warning about Cherrypal, a rebranded Limepc, which uses Freescale’s 5121e PowerPC processor. Due to the PowerPC connection, a few people got excited and were taken in by an apparently shady company, which has now folded. (Thanks to a reader for pointing out this story.)
